App Update Notifications

When app developers release new versions of apps you own, ScripTreeApps notifies you. This page explains how update notifications work, how to dismiss them, and how to manage your notification preferences.

What does "Update available" mean?

When you see "Update available" on an app, it means a new version of that app has been released by the developer. The new version might include:

  • Bug fixes (repairs for things that weren't working right)
  • New features (new tools or capabilities)
  • Performance improvements (the app runs faster or uses less memory)
  • Security updates (patches to protect your data or your computer)

Updates are usually free — once you own an app, you get all future versions at no extra cost.

Where do you see update notifications?

Update notifications appear in a few places:

  • In your account: Go to Account > Library — apps with updates show an "Update available" badge
  • Email notifications (optional): If you've opted in, ScripTreeApps sends you a weekly digest of all your available app updates. You can turn this on or off in your preferences.

How to dismiss an update notification

If you're not ready to update an app right now, you can dismiss the notification:

  1. Go to Account > Library
  2. Find the app with the "Update available" badge
  3. Click Dismiss Notification

The notification will disappear from your library view. Important: After 30 days, the notification will come back automatically (even if you dismissed it). This reminds you that a new version is available and you haven't updated yet.

Should you update?

In most cases, yes — updates are usually a good idea. But it depends on the type of update:

  • Security updates: Update immediately. Security patches protect your computer and data from hackers.
  • Bug fixes: Update soon. Bug fixes repair issues in the app that might affect your work.
  • New features: Update when you want. New features are nice to have but not urgent.
  • Major version changes: Be cautious. Sometimes major new versions work differently. Read the release notes first to see what's changed.

Managing your email preferences

ScripTreeApps can send you a weekly email digest listing all the updates available for apps you own. This is optional.

To opt in to update email digests:

  1. Log in to ScripTreeApps
  2. Go to Account > Preferences > Email
  3. Find App updates digest and toggle it on
  4. Click Save

To opt out of update email digests:

  1. Log in to ScripTreeApps
  2. Go to Account > Preferences > Email
  3. Find App updates digest and toggle it off
  4. Click Save

Note: Even if you opt out of email notifications, you can still see available updates in your Account > Library page anytime. The app list will always show which apps have updates available.

Can I see what changed in an update?

Yes. Every app update includes release notes from the developer. These notes explain what was fixed, what's new, and any important changes:

  1. Go to Account > Library
  2. Click the app with the "Update available" badge
  3. Click View release notes to read the full details

I don't want to update to the latest version

That's fine. You can keep using an older version if you prefer. However:

  • Older versions may have security vulnerabilities or bugs
  • Developers eventually stop supporting old versions
  • Older versions might not work with newer versions of the software they integrate with (like Windows, macOS, or Microsoft Office)

If you have concerns about an update, check the release notes or contact the app developer to ask what changed.
